popular and interesting workshop using felting and oversized knitting
techniques. Both adults and children alike thoroughly enjoyed the experience
with many people coming away from it feeling the benefits of its therapeutic
effects. It was great to see people from all ages get a chance to experience
such a unique crafting skill and many were amazed of the shear simplicity in
the creation of a beautiful piece. Liz has also very kindly donated the
finished piece to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind for them to auction off to
help add to their fundraising efforts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the weavers and spinners to help to give the wow factor and they definitely
delivered this year by bringing along a full untreated fleece which was a

the more intricate workshops and donated this money to the Irish Guide Dogs for

activities for the public to take part in and in doing so help make the
festival an attractive day out for families as all the money taken on the gate
is given directly to the charity. In doing so we were able to encourage more
people to take part in our activities and hopefully in turn generate more

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once all the pieces had dried fully from painting, the only thing left to do was to varnish everything to ensure they would be protected from the Irish weather! I used Yacht varnish for this as it has proved to be the most resilient to wet weather. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once everything was varnished it was time to put the finished pieces into place in Blarney Castle Gardens. The space we would be using for the installation lent itself well to the project as it contains a large oversized picnic table made form reclaimed railway sleepers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the trees surrounding the table the smaller cups that the children had made were hung using fishing line and they gave an ethereal feel to the space. They looked fantastic when all together especially as they were all blue and white.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was a lot of excitement when the students got to see the finished installation in it's place and we had lots of fun pretending to drink tea and eat large cakes!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As it was the launch day for the IGD fundraiser that is Blarney in Bloom there was also a Guide dog present for the occasion which was big hit with all the children. We also had a local councillor in attendance which was brilliant to help to give the whole event as much coverage as possible</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm a bit late in posting the final details of the Mad Hatter Project but with all the goings on for the launch and then the Blarney in Bloom festival itself it was difficult finding the time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the last day of the workshop in the school we worked with the 3rd & 4th class and took them for the full 2 hours as the 5th & 6th class was unavailable on the day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This actually worked to our advantage as we could get all of the painting completed in the one day. We also experimented with an attempt at making lampshades using balloons and doilies but this did not work out to plan! The balloons were not strong enough and they were exploding from the merest touch once blown up regardless of how full they were. Seeing as this was not part of the original plans it didn't affect the rest of the project.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was great to see the students get the chance to get creative with different aspects of the project and there was a very productive table working on the signs that are familiar with the Alice in Wonderland story.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We were very impressed with all the hard work of all the students of the school, especially during parts of the process that may not have been the most appealing..........applying the glue by hand was not the most popular of activities! The thought of the end goal was enough to keep them focused on the task at hand and there was a lot of excitement building in the school as all of the children would get the chance to see their finished work in place at Blarney when they would all attend the launch for the Blarney in Bloom festival the following Thursday.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It was a thorough pleasure working with all the different ages and abilities for such a continued period of time and hopefully we will be back with the school for some future project.</div>

I never got round to writing up the blog from last week, but it involved the 5th & 6th Class and 3rd & 4th Class. They were carrying out the last of the paper mache on the large items for the installation. All the pupils were glad to hear that it was the last workshop doing that technique and were looking forward to painting all the objects.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We started with the 5th & 6th class and it was their job to decide on designs for the different items. For the teacups and saucers they worked in pairs with one person doing the teacup and the other the saucer. We had some images from printed out of the most familiar characters in the story to give them a starting point on their designs. The different character that we had decided to use are: Alice; Cheshire Cat; Rabbit; Queen of hearts; Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee; Caterpillar. The hat will already be representing the Mad Hatter so there was no need to include him. </div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It took a bit of figuring out and they were able to practice first on paper before drawing on the finished design. They had fun trying to work out how to use the shape of the cups themselves as a way to add to the design. Once they were happy with the design they then had to decide on colour schemes for each place setting. The 5th & 6th Class started the painting and then the 1st & 2nd class took over when they came to the workshop at 2pm. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
To give some texture to the surface of the Mad Hatter's Hat, we used a combination of red and black paints, layering them on using tissue to dab on the additional layers. It will need some further work this coming Friday so we will use sponges this time to give that textured look. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We decided to go with the very familiar blue and white patterns for the milk jug and sugar bowl. While the teapot is a very bright yellow that will need more painting also in the next workshop. Also, we will need to make sugar for the sugar bowl which will be made from styrofoam painted with glitter glue.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final workshop is taking place this coming Friday and the installation will be put in place and be used for the launch of the Blarney in Bloom Festival that takes place on Thursday 25th June. It is hoped that as many pupils as possible will get the chance to see their hard work in the beautiful setting of Blarney Gardens as well as taking part in a photoshoot for the launch along with the IGD and members of Cork County Council.</div>

We started the day with the senior infants as they still had to paint their teacups. There was lots of discussion about what design they might use and to help get them started we passed around some patterned paper and printed designs such as flowers, butterflies, pirates etc... to give them some inspiration. The limiting of only two colours really challenges the children to think about how they might make their teacup stand out from everyone elses. To apply the paint they had to use cotton buds as these encourage them to make patterns a lot more than if they used a brush. The natural instinct when you hand the younger children a brush, is to cover the cup in the one block colour! They did a fantastic job and are all very excited to see what the finished installation will look like.<br />

All these items were then covered in paper mache using
newspaper and the flour paste. Once they had applied 2 layers, they then used

newspaper for building up layers and also makes items very strong and durable. </div>

The 5th & 6th class started the
process and carried out most of the construction part of the process. There was
lots of discussion about how the cakes and donuts might be decorated with
suggestions from the children of using beads to look like sprinkles and suing
sand to give texture to the sugar lumps. Those making the milk jug suggested
painting the inside and using cling film to make it look like liquid and this could
also be used for the teacups. The 1st & 2nd class then
continued from where they left off and did most of the paper mache. There was
also lots of talk about what flavour donuts they should be with chocolate being
voted the top favourite. </div>

After some debate about what type of cake to make, it was
decided that a strawberry sponge might work best as the colours would be easy

imagining the cakes were real! They did a fantastic job and all the finished
items are well on their way to being completed. </div>

This coming Friday we will be applying the second layer of
cardboard to most of the items and getting started on the very large teapot.
They will be able to add more detail and shape this week by taping on rolled up

The first group to attend today's workshop was the Junior infants. Their cups had been prepared with a painting of a white base layer so they could get straight into painting their designs onto their cups. We passed around numerous images and pattern types to give them some ideas. Once they got over the limitations of only using blue and white, they got stuck into the design process. They were using the cotton buds to apply the paint to their cups and it was very interesting to see how the different children approached this and used the buds in various ways. Some were intent on just covering the cup in the one colour, some use the buds to make a pattern and others make recognisable shapes on the surface. It was great to see them notice that when the inside of the cup was painted with a particular design that it changed the perception giving it a 3D effect in some cases. Once girl did a lovely design on the inside of her cup that when looked at from above, looked like a rose. Once all the cups were completed they then moved onto painting the bunting using numerous foam stamps, cotton buds and eventually fingers and hands! </div>

The next group attending workshops were the 3rd & 4th Class. They were also at the stage of painting their cups but their cups had only been prepared with a coat of gesso primer paint, Using this type of primer makes it easier for them to then only need to apply one layer of base coat before applying their design. The primer also makes it easier for the base layer to dry using a hair dryer for a few minutes. We passed around the different designs and patterns to give them some ideas and they had the option of using brushes as well as cotton buds. It was great to see how creative they could be with something as simple as a cotton bud and there were a lot of interesting designs by the end of the session. We explained that the cups will all need to be painted with PVA glue to protect them from the elements as they will be outdoors for the finished installation. </div>

The Final group to attend the workshop was the 5th & 6th Class. Their cups were dried and prepared with a layer of gesso primer the same as for the previous group. Once they had decided on which colour to use as a base layer, we then dried them using the hair dryer in order for them to then apply their chosen design. I’m a bit late in getting round to blogging about these
workshops but here goes anyway. We began the day with all of the children in
the Nead na Coille. They had great fun painting their teacups in the blue and
white colours. The cups they had made previously had been painted a base colour of white to enable them to get straight into doing their patterns. They began by using paint brushes but then they swiftly moved onto using cotton buds as this encourages them to make shapes rather than painting the entire cup the one colour. Some of the children in the younger group also made some bunting
when they had finished their cups. To do this they painted, stamped or used
their hands to make marks onto the back of a roll of wallpaper which will be
cut into triangles and sewn to wool to make bunting to hang around the finished
installation adding to the party atmosphere.</div>

The next group to attend workshops this day was the 1st & 2nd class. A lot of the 2nd class were missing as they had an optional half day in preparation for their First Communion the following day. Their cups had also been painted a base colour of white to enable them to get straight into painting the patterns. We had passed around numerous print outs of suggested shapes such as flowers, butterflies, ships, pirates, birds etc, to help get them started. They also used the cotton buds to make their designs. the buds proved much easier to control than a regular brush and they were surprised by the number of shapes they could be used to make: dots, stripes, waves, zig zags, spirals. Some of the children were finished their cups before the session was over so they went on to make bunting in the same was as the Nead na Coille group. </div>

The final group to attend the workshops was the 5th & 6th Class. This was their first time taking part in the project so they were looking forward to finally getting stuck in! We spoke about the finished installation piece and what other items will need to be made over the coming weeks. They still had to make their teacups so we walked them through the process explaining how to rip the paper and what size prices are best suited to the task. They enjoyed the glueing process and all the cups were completed with handles and left to dry on the window sill over the weekend. </div>

The first group attending the workshops today was the Early Intervention class that are part of the Nead na Coille. We passed around a pre-made teacup for them to see what they would be making today. They all loved the texture of the cup and were fascinated that something that felt so hard was made from only cardboard and paper. We explained that the process of the glue drying makes the items very hard and durable.
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQMgNpC2Q4U/VUe-jb_Y30I/AAAAAAAAAUM/6muHX-JMnj8/s1600/IMG_20150501_115459206.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQMgNpC2Q4U/VUe-jb_Y30I/AAAAAAAAAUM/6muHX-JMnj8/s320/IMG_20150501_115459206.jpg" /></a>
They started the process with great energy and made a great job of tearing the sheets of newspaper into small strips no bigger than the size of their hand. As certain textures can be challenging for children with certain learning difficulties, it was great that most of them used their fingers when applying the paste onto the paper.
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g76mHVEHaDo/VUe-8NJ_coI/AAAAAAAAAUc/7Gmaw9c5AGk/s1600/IMG_20150501_114803329.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g76mHVEHaDo/VUe-8NJ_coI/AAAAAAAAAUc/7Gmaw9c5AGk/s320/IMG_20150501_114803329.jpg" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d09n3KZkwiQ/VUe_ArbvlwI/AAAAAAAAAUk/lKZhWToXMQo/s1600/IMG_20150501_114756167.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d09n3KZkwiQ/VUe_ArbvlwI/AAAAAAAAAUk/lKZhWToXMQo/s320/IMG_20150501_114756167.jpg" /></a>
The result of the days’ workshop was some terrific looking teacups. We also spoke about the next stage of painting their cups, and for them to look at patterns in their everyday life to give them ideas for their designs.
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P3Vy3mO1jhE/VUe_JytsfnI/AAAAAAAAAUs/CstuGI6TmSU/s1600/IMG_20150501_114749844.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P3Vy3mO1jhE/VUe_JytsfnI/AAAAAAAAAUs/CstuGI6TmSU/s320/IMG_20150501_114749844.jpg" /></a>
Senior Infants.
This was their first time attending the workshops so we explained what the project was about and passed around the pre-made teacup for them to visualize what they would be making today. They got to work preparing the newspaper by tearing it into smaller strips. We explained that they need to keep the sheets of paper flat and tear it gently as if it was crumpled it would be harder to tear and also less likely to give a smooth surface on their cup.
Next we went through the process of pasting the paper sheets onto the cardboard base using their fingers. We stressed how important it is to smooth the paper onto the surface making sure there are no lumps and bumps as they will dry that way and be difficult to paint. While the children were doing this we talked about the project and the different characters in the story and who their favourite is (the rabbit got the most votes!).

3rd & 4th Class.
In the last workshop, the 3rd & 4th class students had begun the construction of their teacups so today they needed to either finish or touch up the cups and make their handles. As they are all now quite familiar with the process, they got to work straight away and even had the time to cover their handles before attaching them to the finished teacups.
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1lZtnbJ0uQo/VUe_h0fRpsI/AAAAAAAAAVE/iTHOmSVbwBk/s1600/IMG_20150501_143044522.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1lZtnbJ0uQo/VUe_h0fRpsI/AAAAAAAAAVE/iTHOmSVbwBk/s320/IMG_20150501_143044522.jpg" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk2T0OfZNtc/VUe_nsqaBBI/AAAAAAAAAVM/U_glT474X4k/s1600/IMG_20150501_143046937.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bk2T0OfZNtc/VUe_nsqaBBI/AAAAAAAAAVM/U_glT474X4k/s320/IMG_20150501_143046937.jpg" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nCvdW-DHhDY/VUe_uVSiSXI/AAAAAAAAAVU/k_EMm0IkyLQ/s1600/IMG_20150501_143935270.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nCvdW-DHhDY/VUe_uVSiSXI/AAAAAAAAAVU/k_EMm0IkyLQ/s320/IMG_20150501_143935270.jpg" /></a>
They were curious to know why they would be limited to only 2 colours when painting their finished cups. We explained that when they are finished and installed they would have a far greater impact giving the impression of a large mass of cups rather than a mish mash of different colours. They enjoyed discussing what they might paint as we explained that the cup should represent themselves and although they maybe uniform in colour, once looked at closely, each one would be unique in design. These should be regarded as a way to express their interests, opinions and what makes them different from their classmates. Some spoke about sing a horse shoe in their design as they are very keen on horse riding. These symbols can be combined with patterns such as dots, lines, circles, or anything they wish to use so we encouraged them also to look at everyday objects for inspiration.

The Nead na Coille is a special unit in Farran National School that caters for children with autism. It is broken up into the Special ASD class which caters for children of primary school age, and the early intervention class. On Friday the pupils in the ASD class joined us to make their small teacups that will be included in the installation. We explained to the children what we were making and showed them a finished teacup so they could visualize the finished piece.

The children were working with pre-made cardboard templates that were put together with masking tape. They had to attach the base themselves using tape. They then were given sheets of newspaper to tear up into manageable pieces no bigger than their hands. They loved the sound the paper made as they were tearing it into strips. Once there was enough paper, they then dipped their hands into the flour paste and rubbed it into both sides of the newspaper before smoothing it onto the cardboard template. They worked very hard at ensuring the paper was on correctly as it was explained that any lumps and bumps would remain once the paste had dried. They were fascinated that their cup which felt soft would dry and harden to resemble the one previously made by simply using a mixture of flour and water.
Once the cups were covered fully twice with paper, they then made the handles by wrapping paper around the cardboard template and then bending it gently into an ‘S’ shape. These were then left of the window to air dry in the sun.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QX_88b7g-Ms/VT4x5ioPZ2I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/jufpA-S7in4/s1600/IMG_20150424_133719332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QX_88b7g-Ms/VT4x5ioPZ2I/AAAAAAAAAQ4/jufpA-S7in4/s320/IMG_20150424_133719332.jpg" /></a></div>
All the children thoroughly enjoyed the process and are looking forward to the next stage of painting their teacups. To prepare them for this stage we asked them to look at different patterns on objects in their daily lives that could be used to create their unique designs.

1st & 2nd class.
The children also began the construction of their teacups for the installation. It helped having a finished teacup to pass around and again everyone was amazed at how hard and durable the cup was after the paper mache process was complete. !st & 2nd class were familiar with the basic process when they made the giant saucers a few weeks previously and we reminded them to tear the paper into manageable strips no bigger than the size of their hand. The children did an excellent job on making their cups and anyone who had finished then went to help any classmates who found the process a little more challenging.

We discussed the patterns that are used on porcelain china cups that the children may have seen at home and what types of designs they may use themselves. The children will be limited to 2 colours when painting; blue and white. Having only 2 colours will give a level of uniformity to the teacups that will create a bigger impact than if they were all different colours. It also encourages the children to be more creative and having to look in more detail at patterns and designs to help create a unique item. They are encouraged to look at everyday objects around them for inspiration.

Classes attending both workshops: Junior infants, 1st & 2nd class
On Friday both classes began the construction of their personalised teacups. We explained to the children that as well as the larger pieces that make up the table settings every student will also create their very own teacup that will also be on display as part of the larger installation.
These are made using cardboard to create the base which is then covered with strips of torn newspaper in the form of paper mache. The original pattern for the teacups comes from the site http://www.ohcrafts.net/gifts-paper-mache-teacup.php.
The older classes used pre-cut templates made from cardboard, and put them together using masking tape. They then stuck a circle on the bottom to make up the base. Then the children applied the newspaper using the flour paste with their hands. We explained to the children how the paste is made from a mixture of flour, hot water and salt. The older children had used this process in their last workshop and so were familiar with it.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ikNrzAYfNwU/VTkc8c3s_aI/AAAAAAAAAPk/1jz9S6jpDJw/s1600/IMG_20150421_102500018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ikNrzAYfNwU/VTkc8c3s_aI/AAAAAAAAAPk/1jz9S6jpDJw/s320/IMG_20150421_102500018.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hLfxijYJvFI/VTlK2jS4H5I/AAAAAAAAAP0/xIRrsa89Tdk/s1600/IMG_20150421_102830222~2.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hLfxijYJvFI/VTlK2jS4H5I/AAAAAAAAAP0/xIRrsa89Tdk/s320/IMG_20150421_102830222~2.jpg" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-543r9r3cO3A/VTlK7_NhmyI/AAAAAAAAAP8/ZFSQfadzIpg/s1600/IMG_20150421_102834395~2.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-543r9r3cO3A/VTlK7_NhmyI/AAAAAAAAAP8/ZFSQfadzIpg/s320/IMG_20150421_102834395~2.jpg" /></a>
The younger children had the initial part of the construction already done and then applied the base onto their cup using the masking tape. The junior infants were doing it for the first time and all thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands into the paste and did so with gusto. They spoke about the texture of the paste and the overall conclusion was sticky and gooey but fun!
The younger class also made the handle to go with their cup. This was made from a pre-cut cardboard template that is first covered with newspaper and paste and then while it is still wet, is then bent into and ‘S’ shape. Once dried it is then attached to the teacup using newspaper and paste.

While they were applying the newspaper and paste we discussed what the teacups might look like when finished. Some of the younger children spoke of their Granny’s good china as a reference with the type of designs that might be used when painting the finished teacups. We advised the children to look at patterns, shapes and designs around them in their daily lives to help come up with designs for their own teacups.

A few layers of cardboard added to what the pupils started, looking good!Textured Valleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10618294014500085681noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-880312919018517977.post-41495679197301299002015-04-01T11:51:00.000-07:002015-04-01T15:05:41.417-07:00Friday 20th March
Mad Hatter Workshop
We started with the 1st and 2nd class for the first hour. We went through a basic outline of what the project involved, making the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from paper mache. We talked the pupils through the technique and had a saucer already made to show them what today’s end result would be.
The large group of 31 pupils were divided into three groups to prepare the materials for the paper mache.
Group 1: the construction of the saucer base. This was achieved by taping together pre-cut cardboard circles using masking tape.

Group 2: Newspaper. Pupils tore up large sheets of newspaper into more manageable sizes.
Group 3: Cardboard. Pupils tore the cardboard into smaller sizes to soak in water for 5 minutes to soften them so they can then be separated.

We showed the pupils how to make the paste by mixing flour with hot water and using a blender to ensure there were no lumps.
The pupils were divided into groups of 4 and using their fingers, they first applied a layer of newspaper onto the items. They then began to apply a layer of cardboard onto the surface. As the children were doing the paper mache we discussed the project in more detail, giving them an idea of the scale of the pieces they were making. One finished they were asked to sum up the workshop in a one word answer and a lot of the children focused on the texture of the paste using words such as sticky, gooey and warm.
3rd and 4th class
We walked through the project with the class outlining the aim of making oversized items to represent the tea party. The pupils continued from where the previous class finished off as each piece required a minimum of two layers of cardboard to it. They were also working on a large cupcake and the mad hatter’s hat that had been started before the workshops began. In order for the items to be strong and durable they need as many layers as cardboard as possible and this is why some of the items have been pre-made for the students.
Whilst they were applying the layers we discussed in detail the different characters in the story and how we could use colour and images to represent each one clearly in each place setting. They talked about the Queen of Hearts and the use of playing cards and painting hearts; the colours that Alice wears in the story, blue, white and black for her hairband; the Cheshire cat and his very wide grin; the rabbit who is always late so to use the image of a watch for him; the white good queen and how a crown around the cup may be used. They also talked about what other items will need to be made to set up the tea party such as a tea pot, sugar bowl and milk jug, cake stand and cakes and how this may be achieved.

Once they had finished applying enough layers to each item the students then helped to clean up by recycling unused cardboard and newspaper, washing down tables and generally tidying everything away.
The most discussed aspect of today’s workshop was the texture of the paste which was summed up as being mainly gooey!
All items were taken home by me and laid out to dry in the sun over the weekend. Luckily the sun was shining in full and all items were dried out easily enough. In order to maintain the momentum of the project, I will apply additional layers to each item before bringing them back into the pupils for them to paint in the following workshops.
